Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Energy Gaps: Role of Electron Layer Thickness

چکیده
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) stands as a quintessential manifestation of an interacting two-dimensional electron system. One FQHE's most fundamental characteristics is the energy gap separating incompressible ground state from its excitations. Yet, despite nearly four decades investigations, quantitative agreement between theoretically calculated and experimentally measured gaps lacking. Here we report comparison available theoretical calculations that take into account role finite layer thickness Landau level mixing. Our systematic experimental study FQHE uses very high-quality systems confined to GaAs wells with varying well widths. All fall bellow calculations, but increases, results experiments come closer. Accounting for disorder in phenomenological manner, find be reasonable although some discrepancies remain.

Exploring the fractional quantum Hall effect with electron tunneling
In this talk I present a summary of recent work on tunnel junctions of a fractional quantum Hall fluid and an electron reservoir, a Fermi liquid. I consider first the case of a single point contact. This is a an exactly solvable problem from which much can be learned. I also discuss in some detail how these solvable junction problems can be used to understand many aspects of the recent electron...
متن کاملThe fractional quantum Hall effect.
Recent research has uncovered a fascinating quantum liquid made up solely of electrons confined to a plane surface. Found only at temperatures near absolute zero and in extremely strong magnetic fields, this liquid can flow without friction. The excited states of this liquid consist of peculiar particle-like objects that carry an exact fraction of an electron charge. Called quasiparticles, thes...

Their citation reads “ for their discovery of a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations”. In this talk, I will try to describe this new form of quantum fluid and its fractionally charged excitations. However, since I am speaking to a general audience and the phenomenon of the fractional quantum Hall effect may not be familiar to all, I will start my talk with a brief int...
متن کاملCharacterization of fractional-quantum-Hall-effect quasiparticles
Composite fermions in a partially filled quasi-Landau level may be viewed as quasielectrons of the underlying fractional quantum Hall state, suggesting that a quasielectron is simply a dressed electron, as often is true in other interacting electron systems, and as a result has the same intrinsic charge and exchange statistics as an electron. This paper discusses how this result is reconciled w...
متن کاملFinite-temperature fractional quantum Hall effect.
We investigate fractional quantum Hall effect at finite temperature using a fermion Chern-Simons field theoretical approach. In the absence of impurity scattering, the essential aspects of fractional quantum Hall effect, such as the quantization of Hall conductance, as well as quasi-particle charge and statistics are unrenormalized by thermal fluctuations. On the other hand, we find that the lo...
